SOPHIE Mirabella was hoping prayers and postal votes would get her over the line as a Sydney seat held by Labor for more than 90 years officially fell to the Liberal Party on Tuesday.
John Murphy conceded defeat in Reid with Craig Laundy, whose family run a Sydney pub empire, taking the seat after 18 months campaigning.
After paying tribute to Mr Murphy's 15 years of service: "I will work tirelessly to not only repay those who voted for me and to earn the trust of those that didn't."
Labor has held Reid since 1922.
The Liberal's Ms Mirabella was 756 votes behind Independent Cathy McGowan in the Victorian seat of Indi on Tuesday but she was hopeful postal and pre-poll votes would favour her.
"There are lots of people praying and crossing their fingers and toes," she said.
After being ahead on election night and hoping his seat was no longer the bellwether electorate which has gone to the party which forms government since 1972, former minister Mike Kelly was behind in Eden Monaro on Tuesday.
He trailed the Liberal's candidate Peter Hendy by 545 votes.
